BREAKING: Ledger confirms unauthorized hardware implant, says losses may exceed $86M

Friday we asked what you did when Bitcoin dipped under $81,000, and 67% of you held and did nothing.
Another 26% bought more, 5% didn't notice and just 2% sold, a far calmer crowd than the ETF investors who pulled more than $700 million in two days.
Bitcoin's climbed off that low since, so sitting tight has worked so far…
Holding only protects you if the wallet holds up too.
Over the weekend Ledger, the best-known name in hardware wallets, confirmed that a customer's device contained an unauthorized hardware implant.
(A hardware wallet keeps your keys on a small offline device, so a thief normally needs it in their hands to get at your coins.)
The device came from CryptoBilis, an authorized Ledger reseller in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Onchain investigator Specter puts the losses above $86 million across Bitcoin, Ether and Tron, about half of it in ETH, though Ledger hasn't confirmed the figure or how many customers were hit.
Ledger says its own systems weren't compromised and it has no similar reports from devices sold through its own channels.
Nothing at Ledger had to fail for this to work, because the attack went in through the shop that sold the device.
These buyers did what they're told to do, bought from an authorized dealer and kept their coins off exchanges.
Ledger's advice for anyone who bought from CryptoBilis is to leave an unopened device in its box, and if it's already set up, move everything to a new device with a fresh seed phrase.
In August, a Coldcard firmware bug let attackers rebuild keys without going anywhere near the device, and this time somebody got to the device before its owner did.
The obvious retreat is an exchange, which is where plenty of Coldcard owners ran in August, but Bitget had about $352 million taken from its hot wallets less than three weeks ago.
A hardware wallet still keeps your keys off an exchange, but it can only be trusted as far as the shop that sold it, so buy straight from the maker. 🚀

Elon's new company is private. These 3 tickers aren't.
The next Apple may already exist. Insider sources say Elon has spent two years building a secret device inside Tesla's facilities — one he claims will be "10x bigger than the largest product in history."
There's just one problem: the company is private, and unless you know Elon personally, you can't buy a single share. That was true until Guardian's research team found three public ticker symbols sitting in the launch supply chain.

You won't hear these names on CNBC — Wall Street hasn't published a word on the connection. But when the launch hits September 21, that quiet ends.
Some are already calling this the biggest opportunity since AI. For anyone who missed Apple before the iPhone, this may be a second look at that kind of setup.

THE FOURTH BRICK 🧱
Arthur Hayes thinks last week's AI scare is how big Bitcoin bull runs begin.
Hayes is the co-founder and former CEO of BitMEX, and one of crypto's most-read macro essayists.

Arthur Hayes
Here's what he tweeted:
A wall of worry is the old market idea that big rallies climb through bad news, because each scare moves coins from nervous sellers to people who won't sell.
In 2017 it was the block size fight, and Bitcoin still went from about $1,000 to close to $20,000.
Covid knocked it to around $4,100 in March 2020 before a run to almost $69,000, and FTX dragged it to roughly $15,600 in late 2022 on the way to the $126,080 record set a year ago.
The fourth brick went up last Wednesday, when Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake warned that AI-driven maths could break the cryptography guarding wallets before quantum computers do, in the worst case within months rather than years.
His answer, "bunker mode", is an orderly move to fresh addresses that have never sent a transaction, where the public key (the piece an attacker works backwards from) stays hidden.
Vitalik Buterin agreed the risk deserves attention but told people not to rush into new wallets today, and nobody's shown a working attack.
To be fair, a scare only becomes a brick in hindsight, and Luna's collapse in May 2022 wasn't the bottom.
This scare also goes after the maths itself, so if it's ever proven real, holding through it won't help and the fix has to come in new code.
Until then, Bitcoin's near $83,500, a third below that record, and Hayes is betting that's the discount a scare hands anyone patient enough to hold.
Each of Bitcoin's last three big runs started under a scare, and this one comes with a maths problem attached. 🧱

UNDER 80% 💎
Let's kick off the week with a look at the Bitcoin HODL Waves, one of the clearest snapshots of market conviction.
Each coloured band represents the percentage of Bitcoin that last moved within a specific time frame.
The cooler the colour, the older the coins, with purple showing Bitcoin that hasn't moved in 10+ years.
Today we're focusing on long-term holders (LTHs), defined as coins held for more than six months.

Here's how the Bitcoin supply breakdown looks today compared to two weeks ago:
6m - 12m: 16.73% (down from 17.47%)
1y - 2y: 14.42% (down from 14.79%)
2y - 3y: 6.26% (up from 6.01%)
3y - 5y: 8.87% (down from 8.97%)
5y - 7y: 7.44% (up from 7.41%)
7y - 10y: 8.34% (down from 8.38%)
>10y: 17.83% (up from 17.79%)
TL;DR: 79.89% of all Bitcoin has not moved in over six months. 💎
Down from 80.82% two weeks ago, a 0.93% drop that's more than four times the size of the last one.
That's roughly 187,000 Bitcoin slipping back under the six-month line.
Nearly all of it came from the front, with the 6-12 month band down 0.74% and the 1-2 year band down 0.37%.
The 2-3 year band went the other way, up 0.25% as coins from October 2024 turned two.
It's the same band that leaked last time, and it has more than made back the 0.17% it lost.
Beyond three years, the four oldest bands barely moved, a combined 0.07% between them.
For the total to fall this far, more long-held coins had to be spent than the roughly six-month-old coins crossing the line could replace.
The oldest coins held still, and the coins being spent were last moved between late 2024 and this April. 💎

One year after 10/10 flash crash, bitcoin and ether liquidity have rebuilt, but altcoins still face risks. About $11.7 million of Bitcoin orders sat within 1% of the price on Oct. 7, roughly 75% more than on crash day.

What do Bitcoin "Ordinals" let people do?
MEME CORNER 😂
Because what would the crypto world be without its share of memes?

Trivia Answer: Inscribe data like images onto individual satoshis 🥳
Ordinals, launched by developer Casey Rodarmor in January 2023, give every satoshi its own serial number so it can be tracked. Inscriptions then attach data like an image or text to a single sat, which is how NFTs ended up on Bitcoin.
